Man of The Match - Conor Siney🥇
A couple of firsts for the PYL all season. A loss and being kept scoreless for the first time all year. In what proved to be a pulsating, attritional top of the table clash the Kolts came unstuck, in trying conditions, against 2nd place Spirit.
The game was a midfield battle for most of the 1st half with few chances being created but plenty of quality on show. The Kolts were depleted in numbers with a number of key players either away, injured or suspended leaving Coach Tayler with just 1 sub. Conor Siney found himself in the unusual position of CB such was the challenging day ahead. Siney was a warrior going on to put in a Man of the Match performance. He was supported brilliantly by young Zach Kelly. Kelly showed no fear for his young age and was vocal throughout.
Across the park players stood up and fought for each other. Matt Drane was full of energy and grit as he put in a never-say-die performance. Chris Watters was particularly boisterous and commanding, keeping his defence accountable.
The deadlock was broken in the 2nd half when a needless free-kick was given away by veteran midfielder Ethan Jones. Unfortunately, a deflection and ricochet at the near post saw the ball fortuitously land at the Spirit striker foot for a simple tap in. 0-1
The Kolts reacted superbly and fought tooth and nail to get back in. They created 2 quality chances that they should have scored but wasted. They were then given a golden chance when Carlos Burgas broke into the box and was fouled. Penalty!
Unfortunately, as football sometimes goes their ever reliable penalty taker, Kyle Allen, missed the resulting spot kick.
The game concluded with the first loss of the season but this was a performance which deserved more as the Kolts showed fight, hunger and spirit under very difficult circumstances. Plenty of lessons learnt on the day about moments and margins in big games which should hold them in good stead for finals.
Next up it’s back to fortress Bernie to play Castle Hill Rockets at 1pm this Saturday
